If you are experiencing moderate to severe pain in your heel or foot, you may have Plantar Fasciitis. Plantar Fasciitis is an inflammatory condition that affects the heel of the foot, causing in some cases, very extreme pain. There are many causes for this, one being overstretching of the plantar fascia ligament, which runs from the heel to the ball of the foot. This ligament supports the arch and can be affected by both the feet below it, and the muscles above. If the calf muscles are too tight, this can pull on the ligament and cause inflammation. A similar thing happens if you have flat feet. The foot stretches the ligament from below. Other activities that can cause Plantar Fasciitis are standing for long periods of time, running while planting your heel instead of your toe, and constant stress on the plantar fascia ligament. Make sure to stretch your calves, take care that your footwear is not worn out, and seek podiatric treatment if your condition is painful.
Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact Dr. Harry I. Zirna from Lockport Foot Care, PLLC. Dr. Zirna can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

If you have cuts on your feet take extra special care to avoid any contact with these surfaces. Make sure to change your socks everyday and never share them with others. Plantar warts are typically not painful at first, but as they grow they can hurt when you walk. If you notice the wart while it is small, there are various types of home remedies that may be effective. However, once the plantar wart grows larger, a podiatrist will be your best option.

About Plantar Warts
Plantar warts are the result of HPV, or human papillomavirus, getting into open wounds on the feet. They are mostly found on the heels or balls of the feet.
While plantar warts are generally harmless, those experiencing excessive pain or those suffering from diabetes or a compromised immune system require immediate medical care. Plantar warts are easily diagnosed, usually through scraping off a bit of rough skin or by getting a biopsy.
Symptoms
Treatment
To help prevent developing plantar warts, avoid walking barefoot over abrasive surfaces that can cause cuts or wounds for HPV to get into. Avoiding direct contact with other warts, as well as not picking or rubbing existing warts, can help prevent the further spread of plantar warts. However, if you think you have developed plantar warts, speak to your podiatrist. He or she can diagnose the warts on your feet and recommend the appropriate treatment options.

This results in the toe bending over time and ultimately becoming deformed. Hammertoe typically affects the second, third, fourth, and fifth toes, not the big toe. If discovered and managed early, treatments can be non-invasive and the hammertoes may be able to be corrected without surgery. Although hammertoe may be a congenital disorder in some, usually the cause is either a previous toe injury or wearing ill-fitting shoes. The toes can become cramped and start to bend gradually if there is not enough space for them. This is especially the case for people with longer than average toes. If you notice your toes are bent up in a cramped position, seek medical attention. Catching this early is crucial.
Hammertoe
Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact Dr. Harry I. Zirna from Lockport Foot Care, PLLC. Dr. Zirna will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.
Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.
Symptoms
Causes
Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible
Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur
Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe
Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe
Treatment
Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it
Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used
Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

While foot cramps are often unexpected, podiatrists suggest that sufferers stop the activity that caused the cramp and immediately stretch the foot. In a seated position, use your hands to hold your toes upwards to stretch the arches and hold for 30 seconds. Putting all of your body weight on one foot can also sufficiently stretch the cramped muscles and tendons in the feet. In addition to stretching, walking around on the cramped foot can help to release tension.

Everyday Foot Care
Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.
It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

Plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis are two of the most common of these injuries. Counterintuitively, those of us that only play sports on the weekends have a greater risk of suffering from heel and tendon injuries. Orthotics can help reduce the odds that you’ll get hurt. If you jog, play tennis or basketball, or do any kind of high ground impact activity, you should consider getting fitted for orthotics. Custom made for your foot, they will meet your specific foot needs, and prevent further foot injury.

What Are Orthotics?
Orthotics are inserts you can place into your shoes to help with a variety of foot problems such as flat feet or foot pain. Orthotics provide relief and comfort for minor foot and heel pain but can’t correct serious biomechanical problems in your feet.
Over-the-Counter Inserts
Orthotics come in a wide variety of over-the-counter inserts that are used to treat foot pain, heel pain, and minor problems. For example, arch supports can be inserted into your shoes to help correct overarched or flat feet, while gel insoles are often used because they provide comfort and relief from foot and heel pain by alleviating pressure.
Prescription Orthotics
If over-the-counter inserts don’t work for you or if you have a more severe foot concern, it is possible to have your podiatrist prescribe custom orthotics. These high-quality inserts are designed to treat problems such as abnormal motion, plantar fasciitis, and severe forms of heel pain. They can even be used to help patients suffering from diabetes by treating foot ulcers and painful calluses and are usually molded to your feet individually, which allows them to provide full support and comfort.
If you are experiencing minor to severe foot or heel pain, it’s recommended to speak with your podiatrist about the possibilities of using orthotics. A podiatrist can determine which type of orthotic is right for you and allow you to take the first steps towards being pain-free.

The Elderly and their Feet
As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.
Common Conditions
Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet, and can hide many life threating medical conditions.
Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
Shoes that don’t fit properly
Pressure sores
Loss of circulation in legs & feet
Edema & swelling of feet and ankles
Susceptible Infections
Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

In a recent study focusing on the effects of shoes on women’s feet, 88% of the women included were wearing shoes that were too small for their feet. 356 women were included in the study. Most of the women had not re-measured their feet in over ten years, and over 50% stated that they experienced daily foot pain from their shoes. Wearing shoes that are too tight can make way for the development of foot conditions such as bunions, hammertoes, corns, and calluses, and can even result in surgery for the treatment or removal of such conditions. Surgery is often seen as the final option for the treatment of many of these conditions; to lessen the possibility of surgery and the development of these conditions in general, always wear shoes of the proper size.

Orthotics are different from shoe inserts in that they are designed specifically for your feet, meant to treat your specific foot condition. At least “58 percent of Americans have said they have had heel pain due to ill-fitting shoes,” according to the American Podiatric Medical Association, and many resort to using over-the-counter shoe inserts to aid in fighting foot pain. However, even though shoe inserts can offer comfort and support, they are not customized to address the individual’s specific foot problems. Orthotics are crafted from an individual’s foot imprints and can be used to treat a multitude of problems including plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, tendon problems, arthritis, flat feet and more.

A study conducted by King George’s Medical University’s orthopedics department concluded that “over 90% of overweight or obese kids develop flat foot.” Flat-footed people can be characterized as having a lack of arch in the soles of our feet. There are three types of flat feet grades, with grade 1 flat feet described as having little arch, grade 2 lacking an arch and grade 3 developed into a convex arch. The research published indicated that “45% kids had grade 2 flat feet while 43% had grade 1 flat feet. The remaining 12% belonged to grade 3.” Flat feet can affect our everyday lifestyle, so it is best to have it managed at an early age.

Symptoms:
Pain around the heel or arch area
Trouble standing on the tip toe.
Swelling around the inside of the ankle.
Flat look to one or both feet.
Having your shoes feel uneven when worn
Treatment:

Although high heels may be a popular fashion staple, if worn for long periods of time, heels can damage the feet as pressure is increased on the balls of the feet and the toes are squeezed together. Long-term issues can also result from wearing high heels, such as bunions, hammertoe, nerve pain, corns and blisters. Thinner and higher heels “will increase the chances of ankle sprains and other soft tissue injuries, as well as alter your posture which can lead to knee and lower back pain.” Thicker and lower heels are safer as the foot loses less balance and puts less pressure on the balls of our feet.
High heels have a history of causing foot and ankle problems. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact Dr. Harry I. Zirna from Lockport Foot Care, PLLC. Dr. Zirna will assist you with all your podiatric concerns.
Effects of High Heels on the Feet

What kinds of foot problems can develop from wearing high heels?
How can I still wear high heels and maintain foot health?
If you want to wear high heeled shoes, make sure that you are not wearing them every day, as this will help prevent long term physical problems. Try wearing thicker heels as opposed to stilettos to distribute weight more evenly across the feet. Always make sure you are wearing the proper shoes for the right occasion, such as sneakers for exercising. If you walk to work, try carrying your heels with you and changing into them once you arrive at work. Adding inserts to your heels can help cushion your feet and absorb shock.
